First Generation Coconut Chair by George Mulhauser for George Nelson
The coconut chair is an iconic design by George Mulhauser for George Nelson and Associates / Herman Miller. The chair's frame is made of steel and supported by an aluminum tripod base.
This chair is covered in an incredibly sexy blue top grain leather which contrasts wonderfully with the light shell.
The design is low slung and allows for a variety of sitting positions.
This specific chair is a first generation example as noted by the original chair pad cleaning instructions, the epoxy connecting the shell to the leg base, and the curved undercarriage of the front legs.
We elected to forgo painting the metal shell as we love the patina to the original paint. That said, if you felt so inclined for you could easily have the metal shell freshly painted in an off-white to bring it back to new condition.
